View Full Version : Installation without the USB Wifi dongle
I want to install the pc link to my new computer using the already installed Wifi network.
I lost the USB WIfi dongle. Is the installation possible without the dongle?
The MCW770 should be a good product if Philips would admit to correct these things (via a firmware update) :
- let us be able to set up the WIFI connection on the MCW770 without the need of their USB dongle and their Windows software : the settings should be available through a simple Internet browser (and a WIFI card), even under Mac OS X or Linux.
- the MCW770 should be compatible with iTunes share
- the MCW770 should be able to play AAC encoded songs
- the MCW770 should not make all that noise with the cds when it is powered on
Another very disapointed MCW770 costumer

It is possible without the Philips dongle. You do however need need another USB, PCI or PCMCIA wifi adaptor.
Set the SSID to:W770-INST-PHAS
Set the channel to:5
Set it to ad hoc mode NOT infrastructure
Select "automatic address" in TCP/IP properties
You must use expert install mode:
"Before you put your Audio system into install mode the network settings
have to be activated on your PC
If you start install mode on your Audio system without a prepared PC
the Audio system will abort the installation mode.
You can activate this mode on your Audio set if you press the button 'PC-Link'
for at least 5 seconds until the message 'INSTALLING' is displayed,
then release the button and press the button 'Browse' for at least 2 seconds
until the message 'EXPERT INSTALL" is displayed
Only Advanced Setup will be available!
click Next to connect to your Audio system and to go to advanced setup mode"

Hi,
I´ve successfully configured the MC-W770 under my existent Wifi home network. I´m using a Lynksys BEFW11S4, with WEP
The steps
- Press the "PC Link button" for at least 5 seconds, until "Installing" appears on the MC-W770 display
- So, press the "Home" button, for at least 2 seconds, until "Expert install" appears. (The "Browse" button was not working for me.
To complete the setup, You MUST have the dongle OR a wifi card attached to your PC. Configure it to connect only to ad-hoc networks
- Browse the wireless networks avaliables. You will find one network named "W770-INST-PHAS", without authentication.
After connection be successfull, run the Philips Network Utility to configure MC-W770 to join you wifi network.
Once configured, the dongle will not be neede to serve the micro-system.

Thanks Tecnica! That tip will probably help a lot of people (like me). I will try it and then tell you results.

Could you tell me in what order I have to do each step? I got my system today, but it comes with no dongle or instruction manual, or CD. Thanks an awful lot!
Philipps should deliver us a firmware update to be able setting up this hifi system without the need of the dongle and the need of their windows software.
They should also correct this errating comportment : sometimes the system seems to wake up (we ear the CD motorisation) even if you do not ask to ...

Hello, I tried to do what you said, but nothing happends using network utility from the CD.
can add some information about plug dongle or not, when.
For information I'm using a DSL provider that does not allow to set SSID as W770-INST-PHAS (is it a critical issue?)

Could anyone please tell me what steps must I follow to integrate MCW770 to my existing wi-fi home network?
My MCW770 works fine when I use the USB adapter on any PC but it doesn´t recognice my wi-fi router and my notebook wi-fi card.
I have tried folowing Philpis instruction and what Jackdaw and Tchnica say but I couldnt do that, when it shows "expert install" nothing happens after that (I have defined SSID=W770-INST-PHAS but it doesn´t appear on MCW770.
My network consist of Linksys WRT54GL (I have set it to acept B&G and added Philips MAC address), one desktop PC and HP notebook with integrated wi-fi card.
I want to use MCW770 without connecting USB dongle to any PC and here in Argentina I couldn´t get any answer from Philps.
Definitly MCW770 should be able to be accesed trough a browser!
Sorry for my english and thanks in advance!
